As the English top flight begins a new season, Goal takes a look at key records between teams that are going to face off in the opening games
Brentford against Arsenal is only the third ever game in Premier League history to be played on Friday the 13th – the other two games were in April 2001, with Bradford City winning 2-0 against Charlton Athletic and Leeds United beating Liverpool 2-1.
Manchester United vs Leeds United
Leeds are winless in their last 16 league visits to Old Trafford against Manchester United (D6 L10) since a1- 0 win in February 1981 and lost 6-2 there last season. Leeds have played more Premier League matches at Old Trafford without winning than any other stadium (13).
Burnley vs Brighton
Of the 517 Premier League fixtures to have been played at least eight times, Burnley against Brighton has the fifth-lowest goals-per-game ratio, with just 12 goals being scored in the eight meetings between the sides (1.5 per game).
Chelsea vs Crystal Palace
Chelsea have won 16 of their last 20 Premier League meetings with Crystal Palace (L4), including each of the last seven.
Everton vs Southampton
Southampton have won their opening fixture in just one of their last 14 Premier League campaigns (D7 L6), beating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in 2013-14. The Saints have the lowest win rate in opening games of all Premier League sides to play in at least 10 campaigns (9% - won 2/22).
Leicester City vs Wolves
Leicester have lost just one of their last 24 home league games against Wolves (W14 D9), going down 4-1 in May 2007 in the Championship.
Watford vs Aston Villa
This will be the first-ever meeting between Watford and Aston Villa on the opening day of a league season. The Hornets have won six of their previous 10 home league games against Villa (D3 L1).
Norwich vs Liverpool
Liverpool have won their last seven away Premier League matches against Norwich City, only having a longer away top-flight winning run against West Bromwich Albion (8 in a row between 1983 and 2009).
Newcastle United vs West Ham United
This is the third time Newcastle United and West Ham have faced in their first Premier League match of the season (previously 2002-03 and 2020-21). The only such fixture to be played more often in Premier League history is Newcastle vs Tottenham Hotspur (four).
Tottenham vs Manchester City
Manchester City have lost their last three away games against Tottenham in all competitions – against no side has manager Pep Guardiola lost four away games in a row in his managerial career. Indeed, Guardiola’s four away defeats to Tottenham is the joint-most he’s suffered as a manager (level with Chelsea and Liverpool).
