The crash occurred around 8am.
According to eyewitnesses, a sixth victim was seriously injured and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the accident was caused by the truck.
The driver of the articulated vehicle was said to have lost temporary control of the vehicle and rammed into the Toyota Camry car, which was coming from the Kubwa end of the expressway towards the Abuja city centre.
The FRSC official said the force of the collision made the car, which was conveying six passengers, to veer off the road, killing five of the occupants on the spot.
He stated, “The impact forced the car, with number plate ABC 978 SL, to crash into the concrete pillar of a bridge across the highway. Five persons in the car, including a couple, died on the spot.
“You can see their corpses on the ground. A sixth person, a female, who was also in the car, sustained serious injuries and has been rushed to hospital.
“We are trying to move the dead to the mortuary of one of the hospitals in the city. The truck did not stop after hitting the car. However, it was chased and the police have arrested the fleeing driver.
“A policeman at the scene confirmed that the fleeing truck and its driver were apprehended around the AYA junction.”
