Just barely 2 months after the Lagos Guber election, the candidates of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Mr Owolabi Salis and Prof. Ifagbemi Awamaridi of the Labour Party have petitioned the outcome. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy-elect, Obafemi Hamzat, were dragged to the state governorship election petitions tribunal but expressed confidence saying that they were sure of emerging victorious at the end.
Sanwo-Olu at 11: 41 am arrived the tribunal sitting at the Ikeja High Court complex to sign a response to two petitions alongside his Deputy elect and addressed reporters saying that they have come to put official deposition to the challenge by two gubernatorial candidates over his victory at the March 9 polls.
He said with certainty that the outcome of the election was a reflection of the hearts of Lagosians who voted and that the process was devoid of any incident declaring his trust for the tribunal on the grounds that it will do its job well to the pleasure of Lagosians.
Sanwo-Olu said that it was the duty of the tribunal to determine if the petitions had any merit, adding that “it is a process that all of us must submit ourselves to. That is why we are here today and we are confident that the tribunal will do its job well.”
Sanwo-Olu also reassured Lagosians that in his administration, judicial reforms for speedy administration of justice will be undertaken as Lagos for the past 20 years has championed judicial reforms.
The Head of Sanwo-Olu’s legal team, Mr Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN), said that he was also confident of victory for the governor-elect at the tribunal. “We are working based on the facts on the ground; we have been able to review the two petitions and we are not in any kind of doubt that we have sufficient and credible answers to all the allegations in the petitions.
“Until today, Sanwo-Olu was not served any petition. The APC was served, but he personally came to the tribunal today to sign for his own process. Immediately he signed, he filed a reply. This is to show that we are prepared for these petitions and we have no problem about the eventual outcome.
According to Owonikoko, The job of the governor-elect is to defend the election and protect the mandate of the electorate and that is what Sanwo-Olu has come to do.
