Seven people have been killed in a series of building collapses in eastern China, authorities have announced.
Four multiple-story buildings caved in for yet-unknown reasons in the Wenzhou region of China’s Zhejiang Province, south of the commercial hub of Shanghai, during the early hours of Thursday, the local government said.
Two people were rescued from the rubble.
There was no information on whether there were people still trapped in the debris or on why all of the buildings collapsed together. No rainfall was reported in the village over the past few days, diminishing the likelihood of a landfall.
In October 2016, 22 people were killed following a building collapse in the same region. The victims were said to be migrant workers who were living in poorly-constructed houses with cheap rent.
Local paper Wenzshou Daily says there are around 1,400 dangerous buildings in the region.
China has seen several deadly building collapses in recent years. Some of the incidents have been blamed on low-quality construction.
