An African-American woman in the US state of Mississippi has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for seeking to support the Daesh (ISIL) Takfiri terrorist group.
The announcement was made on Thursday after the US Department of Justice made the ruling on Jaelyn Delshaun Young, who is accused of providing support for the Takfiri group operating in Iraq and Syria.
"Young, 20, of Starkville, Mississippi, was sentenced today to serve 144 months in prison for conspiring to provide material support to ISIL, a designated foreign terrorist organization," the department said in a statement.
The defendant, who pleaded guilty before district court officials in Mississippi on March 30, was also ordered Thursday to serve a 15 year term of supervised release after her imprisonment.
Young admitted to conspiring with her fiance, Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, who also pleaded guilty to the same charge on March 13.
Twenty-three-year-old Dakhlalla will be sentenced on August 24.
According to prosecutors, the two had planned to fly to Turkey and then cross into Syria to join the terrorist group.
Daesh terrorists, many of whom were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, still control parts of Iraq and Syria. They have been engaged in crimes against humanity in areas under their control.
They have been carrying out horrific acts of violence such as public decapitations and crucifixions against all communities, including Shia and Sunni Muslims, Kurds, and Christians.
Since 2014, the United States and some of its allies have been carrying out airstrikes against purported Daesh positions in Iraq and Syria.
Two days ago, US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump accused President Barack Obama and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton of founding Daesh in the Middle East region.
Addressing supporters at a rally in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Wednesday, Trump said Daesh is "honoring President Obama."
“He’s the founder of ISIS. He's the founder! He founded ISIS,” the real estate tycoon said, using an alternative acronym for the terrorist group.
“I would say the co-founder would be ‘Crooked’ Hillary Clinton,” Trump added.
The New York businessman also went on to criticize Obama’s decision to withdraw American military forces from Iraq and leaving behind a void for Daesh terrorists to fill.
