The email exchanges between seven top DNC members were released by WikiLeaks on Friday, pointing to an insider effort to undermine the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton’s rival, Bernie Sanders, including several stinging denunciations of him and his organization.
The development came only days before the formal nomination of Clinton – former First Lady, New York Senator and the Obama Administration’s first secretary of state -- at the party's convention in Philadelphia.
This is while Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has waged an on-line campaign to sow discord among the Democrats by insisting that the leaked emails point to a scheme by Democratic Party officials to destroy Sanders and are proof of the Democrats’ manipulative system.
The news of the leaks took center stage on social media, threatening to upend the Democrats' messaging and steal attention from a chaotic and divided Republican National Convention, which concluded Thursday night.
The email exchanges will potentially reopen the wounds of a bitter Democratic primary season, just as the party kicks off its own national conference designed to highlight a unified and energized party.
Responding to the leaks, Sanders' campaign manager Jeff Weaver said, "someone in the DNC needs to be held at least as accountable as the Trump campaign," for a controversy involving Melania Trump's speech earlier this week, which was taken from a past speech by Michele Obama.
