A Sydney man who allegedly faked his own death and fled overseas to avoid facing trial for attempted murder has been extradited back to Australia and won't be released on bail.
Roberto Saenz de Heredia, 47, landed at Sydney airport yesterday, nearly two decades after his former friend Brett Boyd was seriously injured by a parcel bomb. It's believed he may seek bail when he is expected to face Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.
The former Foxtel Television Shopping Network presenter, who reportedly started a new life as a foreign exchange trader in Spain, was arrested at London's Gatwick Airport on April 27 while travelling to visit family in Britain after UK authorities discovered his secret identities.
In June 1998 De Heredia, then 29, allegedly planted a parcel bomb at Boyd's home on Sydney's northern beaches after Boyd failed to repay an A$80,000 loan. Boyd lost his left eye and right thumb, suffered facial scars and partial deafness. He died in 2008.
Three weeks earlier De Heredia was shot three times outside his Botany home.Police suspected De Heredia had been killed when his car was found smeared with blood in Kings Cross in July 1999. But it's alleged he instead fled to Bali on a stolen passport.
