US Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders would perform better than party front-runner Hillary Clinton in head-to-head matchups with their Republican opponents, according a new poll.
In head-to-head general election, Sanders would beat all three remaining GOP candidates, including Republican front-runner Donald Trump, the CBS News poll released on Thursday found.
He has a 17-point lead over Trump, a 12-point lead over Senator Ted Cruz and a five-point lead over John Kasich.
Clinton, on the hand, maintains a 10-percentage point over Trump and a three-point edge over Cruz. She would lose to Kasich by 6 points.
Sanders pointed to his recent poll numbers Thursday night during the Democratic presidential debate at the Brooklyn borough of New York City, citing his victories in eight of the last nine state contests.
“When we began this campaign almost a year ago, we started off at 3 percent in the polls,” Sanders said. “We were about 70 points behind Secretary Clinton. In the last couple of weeks, there were two polls out there that had us ahead.”
Both the Democratic and Republican front-runners are viewed unfavorably among registered voters overall, the polls show.
Sixty-three percent of voters viewed Trump unfavorably, a six-point increase from the same poll last month. More than half of registered voters view Clinton unfavorably, similar to results from a month ago.
The New York state primary elections are scheduled for April 19. A total of 95 Republican delegates are up for grabs while Democrats will battle for 247.
