September is turning out to be the month smartphone geeks have been waiting for.
Last Wednesday, Nokia introduced the Lumia 920 Windows Phone. They didn’t disappoint Gizmodo, which called the phone “wonderful,” and added that it’s “smooth and fast and sleek and has a ton of future-is-here features.”
Gizmodo especially loved the Lumia 920’s curved glass screen. “It’s gorgeous. It’s bright and defined and photos look incredible on it.” They also praised the Lumia 920’s much-hyped PureView camera, which kicked the respective butts of the Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S in a side-by-side comparison.
The Lumia 920 features some cool futuristic technology. The first is wireless charging. Engadget was the first to reveal the sleek and transportable Fatboy Charging Pillow, and now Nokia has announced that Lumia owners will be able to test out their wireless charger at Virgin Atlantic Lounges and The Coffee Bean locations nationwide.
The Lumia 920 also has built-in NFC, which allows users to seamlessly transfer files, photos, and videos to nearby NFC phones. It also packs the Windows 8 operating system. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop told Mashable that the Lumia 920 is the “next step” in the Windows Phone journey.
Not everyone was impressed, however. Nokia saw their stock plummet 13 percent following the announcement, reflecting investors’ doubts that the Windows Phone could steal back some of the smartphone market from Apple and Android.
“The challenge is that the world is working on the 4th, 5th, and 6th editions of their devices while Nokia is still trying to move from chapter 1. It still has quite a bit to catch up,” RBC analyst Mark Sue told Reuters. ”People were looking for something that would dazzle. Most investors will view it as evolutionary, not revolutionary.”
Tech bloggers only get a week to catch their breath before Apple reveals the iPhone 5 on Wednesday. It’s the first product launch in a long time for which Apple revealed the name of the specific product ahead of time. The invitation includes a large “5” in the shadow of the September 12 event date, reports Mashable.
The only certainty about the iPhone 5 is that it will run iOS 6, which Apple announced back in June. A larger screen is expected – 4 inches instead of the 3.5 inches of the iPhone 4S. And, if you’re desperate to hold one now, you can buy a mockup from China. Over at TechCrunch, Apple evangelists have been obsessing over a leaked photo of the iPhone 5’s packaging.
The iPhone 5 won’t have futuristic features like wireless charging and built-in NFC, but CNet expects the iPhone 5’s sales to still be of historic proportions.
Over at Seeking Alpha, Kofi Bofah doesn’t dispute that the iPhone 5 will be a huge hit, but he does think that the “iPhone 5 will be Apple’s last hurrah.” It’s a fascinating must-read.
