The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the executive chairmen of Bebeji, Rogo, and Bagwai Local Government Areas for three months following allegations of financial misappropriation, abuse of office, and administrative irregularities.
The suspension was announced on Tuesday during plenary following the adoption of a report submitted by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. Presenting the findings, Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala stated that the legislative action followed separate petitions filed by the legislative councils of Bebeji and Rogo, alongside concerned residents from Bagwai.
According to the committee's report, investigations into Bagwai Local Government Area revealed evidence suggesting the misappropriation of public funds earmarked for developmental projects. In Bebeji, the committee cited credible allegations involving persistent violations of due process in contract awards, improper sale of council land, diversion of public funds, and compelling contractors to remit payments into unauthorized accounts. In Rogo, the chairman was accused of undermining state government policies, non-compliance with administrative regulations, and diverting funds meant for feeder roads and rural electrification initiatives.
Following the presentation, the Assembly unanimously adopted the recommendations pursuant to Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution. The lawmakers directed the vice chairmen of the three affected local government areas to assume leadership in acting capacities to ensure administrative continuity while full investigations proceed.
The legislative action marks another instance of parliamentary oversight in the state's local government administration, following the previous suspension of the Rano Local Government Council chairman over allegations bordering on financial irregularities and administrative infractions.
