Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.
The announcement was made on Friday through a statement issued by Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation.
According to the statement, Owoade’s selection followed rigorous consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the council of kingmakers in Oyo.
“After comprehensive consultations and divinations, the Oyomesi recommended Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade, and his appointment as the new Alaafin of Oyo has been approved by Governor Seyi Makinde,” the statement read.
Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, highlighted that the appointment resolves the lingering controversies that followed the demise of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away on April 22, 2022.
“This decision effectively ends the disputes that have surrounded the selection process since the transition of the late Oba Adeyemi. We call on all residents to support the new Alaafin and embrace this historic milestone,” Ojo remarked.
Oyelade expressed optimism about the future of Oyo under the new monarch, emphasizing that his reign would bring peace, unity, and development to the ancient kingdom.
“We believe the new Alaafin will usher in an era of harmony, progress, and prosperity for the people of Oyo while preserving the dignity and legacy of the Alaafin institution,” Oyelade added.
Residents of Oyo State have been urged to rally behind Prince Owoade as he begins his journey as the custodian of the kingdom’s rich heritage and traditions.
