Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has urged investors to explore the untapped potential of Lagos' waterways during the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta held on Saturday in Victoria Island.
The Governor, joined by his wife, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and other dignitaries, celebrated the event, which showcased the state’s rich cultural and aquatic heritage.
The Regatta featured vibrant displays from Lagos' five Ibile divisions, with elaborately decorated boats that captivated spectators. Highlights included rowing competitions, cultural performances, and live entertainment, creating an unforgettable experience for attendees.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by top officials and guests, toured the state’s waterways on a yacht, highlighting their immense tourism, recreational, and investment opportunities. Speaking after the tour, the Governor described the event as a tribute to Lagos’ cultural and aquatic identity, emphasizing the economic and historical significance of the waterways.
“This event is a vivid demonstration of our cultural wealth and our profound relationship with water, which is central to Lagos’ identity,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “Our waterways are not just transportation channels but vital ecosystems for tourism and development. We are committed to harnessing these opportunities to drive economic growth and sustainability.”
The Governor also linked the regatta to his administration's T.H.E.M.E.S.Plus agenda, emphasizing tourism and the creative economy as pillars of Lagos' socio-economic progress.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, praised the regatta as a symbol of Lagosians' dedication to preserving their heritage while fostering tourism. She lauded the Governor's efforts in improving waterways infrastructure and ensuring environmental sustainability.
“This year’s theme, ‘Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,’ reflects the integral role waterways play in shaping our identity,” she said, commending sponsors, organizers, and participants for making the event a success.
The regatta concluded with electrifying performances from top musical acts, including Niniola, Atawewe, Pheelz, and 9ice, solidifying Lagos' position as a cultural and tourism hub. Attendees left inspired by the state’s vibrant traditions and its commitment to innovation and growth.
