US President Donald Trump is “engaged in a cover up,” in the wake of ongoing congressional investigations into his administration, says the majority House leader.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi made the comments before reporters on Capitol Hill after a special meeting of House Democrats about the probes on Wednesday.
"We do believe that it is important to follow the facts, we believe that no one is above the law, including the president of the United States, and we believe the president of the United States is engaged in a cover up, in a cover up," she said.Pelosi made the comments amid mounting pressure from members of the Democratic Party for impeachment proceedings.
During the meeting, other top Democrats reportedly called for the president’s impeachment in the wake of his potential obstruction of justice; 10 examples of possible obstruction have been outlined in special counsel Robert Mueller’s report after investigation into Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
"We need to stand up for ourselves," said Democratic Representative Steve Cohen , while Financial Services Chairwoman Maxine Waters called cecking the president the Congress “responsibility.”After the Democrats’ closed-door meeting, Pelso headed for the White House to meet Trump along with Senate Minority Chuck Schumer and other Democrats but Trump canceled the meeting over a possible $2 trillion infrastructure package, telling them to end "phony investigations."
"I don’t do cover ups," he then told reporters in the Rose Garden of the White House.
The US president has been stonewalling ongoing congressional investigations, refusing to release his tax returns or to respond to congressional subpoenas.
