It was gathered that the accident, which occurred around 5.59am, involved two SUVs, a bus and two tankers.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the vehicles involved were a white Mercedes Benz Formatic SUV with number plate APP 245 PS; a Toyota Forerunner SUV; a white Mazda bus with number plate YYY 83 YC; a yellow Mack tanker belonging to Bovas Petroleum with number plate AJW 250 XA; and a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation IVECO tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit.
It was gathered that the driver of the NNPC tanker was trying to overtake the Mazda bus while heading towards Ibadan when it collided with the other tanker and spilt its content.
PUNCH correspondent learnt that the spillage led to a fire incident, which engulfed the five vehicles.
The Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Clement Oladele, who confirmed the accident, noted that one person was injured out of the 11 persons involved in the accident.
He added that the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving on the part of the tanker drivers.
Oladele stated, “The accident happened by the diversion at the Fidiwo end of the expressway and it was a head-on collision.
“The NNPC tanker was coming from Lagos and going towards Ibadan when the driver overtook the Mazda bus. He had not completely overtaken the bus when he collided with another tanker and went up in flames. There was no death; everybody was able to escape before we took them to hospital.”
The FRSC boss, who urged motorists to avoid overtaking at construction zones, added that drivers were expected to drive at 60km per hour in such areas.
