The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has arrested one Mr. Babatunde Oni, for allegedly issuing dud cheques to purchase cars from unsuspecting car dealers.
A statement made available to newsmen by the Ibadan zonal office of EFCC, said Babatunde used dud cheques to buy a N1.580.000 2006 Toyota Matrix car from one Mr. Kamoru Yekini in Iwo, Osun state, and a N2 million 2007 Toyota Avensis car from another dealer at Mokola area of Ibadan.
The Ibadan zonal office of the anti-graft agency revealed that Babatinde was arrested following a petition by Mr. Yekini, who alleged that on October 16, 2018, two men approached his shop at Iwo and negotiated to buy the 2006 Toyota Matrix car at N 1,580.000.
The petitioner claimed that while the other suspect, who are now at large, introduced himself as a doctor from the BOWEN University, Babatunde disguised as a driver to the “fake doctor”.
The petitioner revealed that after the negotiation, the two suspected fraudsters issued a postdated First Bank cheque, bearing the name of Rabiu Bamidele Lateef, supposedly to cover the cost.
Babatunde later went to the bank to deposit the money into the dealer’s bank account and came back with a copy of deposit slip, after which the dealer reluctantly released the car and its customs duty papers to the “ buyer”.
But Yekini was surprised when he received a phone call from his bank the following day that the cheque was returned because of insufficient funds in the account.
Consequently, the car dealer forwarded a petition to the EFCC, who immediately swung into action, which led to the recovery of the car in Abuja. The petitioner was shocked on discovery that the car was already sold to a lady at N1.8 million, and the suspect,Babatunde was arrested.
While Babatunde was already in EFCC’s custody, another dealer surfaced with a similar complaint, alleging that on September , 2018 two men came to his filling station located at Mokola area of Ibadan, and negotiated to buy a 2007 Toyota Avensis car at N2 million.
The complaint said the two men, including Babatunde, issued a N2 million cheque, and Babatunde, as usual went to deposit the cheque into the dealer’s bank account.
Babatunde later came back with a copy of deposit slip, after which they requested that they should be allowed to test the car. While the dealer was busy on phone confirming the status of the deposit from his bank officer, the suspected fraudsters reportedly zoomed off with the car.
