An American woman is suing her own child for undergoing gender transition treatment.
The mother, Anmarie Calgaro, has filed a lawsuit in Minnesota alleging her 17-year-old transgender daughter, JDK, wrongfully underwent the treatment without her consent.
"The bottom line of this lawsuit is that my basic civil rights to raise my child in the way I want have been violated," Calgaro told BuzzFeed News.
In court papers, she names her child, who she refers to as her son, as one of the defendants.
The teen's health care providers, Park Nicollet Health Services and Fairview Health Services, are also named as defendants, as are St Louis County and the teen's school district.
The suit alleges that they illegally treated her as an emancipated minor, BuzzFeed reported.
Anti-abortion law firm the Thomas More Society is acting on Calgaro's behalf.
Last year, JDK applied to be legally emancipated from her parents, claiming she had been living independently and supporting herself. In Minnesota, teens who live alone and are supporting themselves are allowed to give consent on medical services without their parents being notified.
In April this year, her mother wrote to the court objecting to her changing her name from the boy's name given to her at birth to JDK.
