Former Ohio state senator Nina Turner, who firmly supported Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid, has received an offer to become Green Party candidate Jill Stein’s running mate in the race for the White House, a report shows.
Cleveland.com published the report on Sunday night and added Turner is expected to respond to the offer over the next days.
According to the report, Stein has personally reached out to Turner to offer her the vice presidential position.
Turner made the headlines last week, after some of Sanders’ supporters named her as an alternative to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine.
The Green Party would kick off its national convention in Huston on Thursday and Turner is expected to be there in case she accepts the offer.
Turner, who had initially voiced support for Clinton, stirred controversy after leaving her top position at the Ohio Democratic Party to join Sanders’ campaign as a high-profile surrogate.
In 2014, former US President Bill Clinton help Turner raise money to fund a unsuccessful run to become Ohio’s secretary of state.
Prior to Turner, Stein had approached Sanders himself, inviting him to join her party and continue his “revolution” through the Green Party.
“If Sanders repudiates the Democratic Party that betrayed him, I'd welcome him into Green Party to continue the revolution,” Stein said in tweet last week, a day after the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks uncovered a secret plot by top leaders at the US Democratic National Committee (DNC) to undermine Sanders’ bid to win the party’s 2016 presidential nomination.
More than 19,000 emails leaked by the website showed how some DNC officials tried to deal with the Vermont senator’s popularity, which posed a direct challenge to the former first lady.
However, Sanders turned down the offer by reiterating his full support for Clinton.
