A man has been shot dead by police after stabbing six people, two fatally, at a home and a shopping mall south of Boston, Massachusetts, authorities say.
Arthur Darosa, 28, of Taunton, crashed a car outside a home on Tuesday and then walked inside. He stabbed an 80-year-old woman, who later died at a hospital, and another woman, who was being treated for life-threatening injuries.
According to neighbors, the women were mother and daughter. “My son was here and heard the loud noise,” a neighbor said. “An accident had happened, someone was coming out of the house. [He] realized that person had a knife.”
The suspect then drove to the Silver City Galleria mall and crashed his vehicle into the front of a Macy's store. He assaulted multiple people inside the store before running to a Bertucci's restaurant where he stabbed four people.
“He then exited his vehicle and assaulted multiple people in Macy’s, before making his way on foot to Bertucci’s Italian Restaurant,” Bristol County DA Thomas Quinn said in a news conference Tuesday night.
All of the victims were hospitalized and one of them, a 56-year-old man, was later pronounced dead.
After the stabbing, Darosa was shot and killed by an off-duty deputy sheriff, who intervened at the restaurant.
Police have not provided any details about the motive for the attacks, but said an investigation was being conducted.
“The suspect’s motive remains under investigation but at this point we are aware of no nexus to terrorism,” police said.
“There is no continuing threat to the public,” said Dave Procopio, a Massachusetts State Police spokesman.
