US Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton has lashed out at America’s powerful gun lobby, saying there are just too many guns in the country.
Clinton attacked the gun lobby on Thursday while meeting with families of gun violence.
"It just doesn't make sense to me. I find it absolutely indefensible, the arguments that are made by people who will not accept responsibility for what is going on in our country," she said in Hartford, Connecticut.
"When you take a stand against gun violence and against the gun lobby you are subjected to some of the most vile harassment on the Internet that you can imagine. It is beyond decency," she added.
"There is an organized effort, again, to intimidate, to silence."
The Democratic presidential hopefuls also called for "comprehensive gun safety reform" in the US.
The former secretary of state earlier told a forum in Philadelphia that “when it comes to guns, we have just too many guns. On the streets, in our homes, in our neighborhoods.”
"We just have too many guns in this country in the wrong hands," she said. "We have to address it."
“And, you know, there’s been a lot of talk in this campaign, in the primary campaign, about the power of certain interests in our country,” noted Clinton. “And we do have a bunch of powerful interests, make no mistake about it. But there is no more powerful lobby than the gun lobby.”
Earlier in January, US President Barack Obama vowed to bypass Republican-dominated Congress and its opposition to gun control through introducing a raft of executive actions to resolve the country’s gun crisis.
According to figures by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), firearms kill more than 33,000 people in the United States every year- a number that includes accidental discharge, murder and suicides.
