I have been to several entertainment and comedy shows around Africa, Europe, United States and other parts of the world. Comedians are meant to be funny and hilarious with basic responsibility of making people laugh during their performance. Although it is not very easy to make people laugh all the time, but most of these entertainers are always performing in a humorous and amusing manner especially through their jokes and acting. They could do anything but be serious. But they’re no fools. While you smile at home, they are rocking and dancing with good money to their personal and business bank accounts.

Alibaba makes his money through a chain of businesses in Lagos: as a reputed motivational speaker, a professional comedian patronised by almost all the big brands and political bigwigs in the country. His net worth is estimated to be over 3 billion naira. It is estimated that he performs in a minimum of two events weekly at an average rate of 4 to 4.5million naira per event. That would add up to about 400 million naira per annum! A jester extraordinaire, but a serious businessman too. His Lekki home alone is valued at over N300 million. Dubbed the father of modern Nigerian comedy, he’s the delight of politicians and the big boys in Nigeria. His appearance fee stands between N4 to N5 million per event. And he’s sure of two events per week: Bringing him to N400 million per annum. With a net worth of over N3 billion, little wonder he remains the kingmaker of Nigeria’s comedy industry.
With over thirty years of performing on stage and hosting events for almost all Nigeria’s former presidents and the present one, Ali Baba sits at the apex. Even President Olusegun Obasanjo once jokingly accused him of being overpaid for his performance. His Lekki mansion where he lives is said to be worth more than N300 million alone.
1. Trevor Noah (South Africa)
He was given birth to on 20th February 1984 and he is a South African comedian, writer, producer, radio personality, actor, media critic, and television host. In 2015 March, Comedy Central announced that Noah would become the host of The Daily Show, following the departure of Jon Stewart. He is an international comedian that has been to UK, Europe and the United States for shows and has been featured on TV shows several times because of his talent.
He’s the young, super-cool comedian with the cherubic face and itchy Twitter finger who, beginning in 2012, achieved global recognition by way of Jay Leno, David Letterman, and Jon Stewart. In a series of solo performances around the world over the last three years, he has blown up in ways that cultural figures from South Africa haven’t since the 1960s and 1970s, when musicians like Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba packed music halls during the height of racial oppression back home.
Noah is a post-Apartheid comic who specializes in mining material from melancholic episodes of his own harsh upbringing. His mother, Patricia, is a Xhosa-speaking black woman from Soweto township who fell in love with a white man from Switzerland in the early 1980s, a period when cross-racial romance was still illegal. Noah was born an outsider’s outsider—a light-colored boy in a black community who had to learn to cross multiple lines of difference, including language, color, and culture. Noah put it to a documentary filmmaker this way: “I’ve lived a life where I’ve never really fitted in in any particular way. Even now, people still debate on what I am. People say, ‘Oh you’re black,’ And then someone will turn around and say, ‘But he’s not black, he’s coloured.’ And then coloured people will say, ‘But you’re not coloured.’ And then when you get older it’s cool because you’ve lived everywhere and nowhere, and you’ve been everyone and no one, and so you can say everything and nothing and that’s really what affects my comedy and everything I say.” Perhaps his greatest strength as a comedian is his ability to serve as a translator across all these intersecting lines. In a polyglot world, he’s made it his trademark to explain ourselves to one another.
