US Republican Senators Tom Cotton and Marco Rubio are
attempting to force a vote on an amendment requiring Iran to recognize
Israel as an independent state as part of any potential nuclear
agreement.
After being blocked by Democrats for several days, they used a procedural maneuver to force Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to schedule a vote on the amendment on Thursday.
“We need to vote. If you don’t want to vote, you shouldn’t have come to the Senate. If you’re in the Senate and you don’t want to vote, you should leave,” Cotton told his colleagues.
The amendment proposed by Rubio, calls for Iran to recognize Israel as part of a nuclear deal with the United States.

Regarding the issue, President Barack Obama said earlier this month that recognition of the Israeli regime cannot be a part of the nuclear agreement with Iran. He said requiring Tehran to recognize Israel is a "fundamental misjudgment."
The amendment is brought up to legislation that would prevent the Obama administration from lifting sanctions against Iran until Congress reviews a final nuclear deal.
Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is the author of the bill called the Iran Nuclear Review Act.
On Wednesday, the Senate voted against another amendment introduced by Republican Senator Ron Johnson that sought a final Iran deal to be submitted to the Senate as a treaty.
Sen. Johnson said the nuclear agreement “is so important to the security of this nation and world peace, that it rises to the level of a treaty.”
The only way to block Republicans from offering more amendments to the bill is for McConnell to file a motion to end debate on the legislation.
Iran and the P5+1 group of countries -- the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany -- reached a framework agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program on April 2 in Switzerland. The two sides are working to finalize a deal by the end of June.
If a final deal is reached, it would lift all nuclear-related sanctions imposed against the Islamic Republic in exchange for certain steps Tehran will take with regard to its nuclear program.
