Chelsea are set to make a shock deal to bring Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to the club.
The Stamford Bridge club are lining up a sensational bid to land the Liverpool skipper at the end of the season when he leaves Liverpool after a 20-year career at Anfield.
According to the latest reports at the Metro, the Blues are planning to land the player on a short-term loan deal before the player joins up with MLS outfit LA Galaxy in February.
Boss Jose Mourinho has long admired the 34-year-old and has failed in his previous attempts the sign the Kop legend.
Given that Gerrard has been a one club man his entire career it would be hugely surprising if he were to consider a move to another Premier League side, even on a short term basis.
Gerrard joined Liverpool as an eight year old and has served the club with distinction for 17 seasons though never secured a Premier League crown, a move to Chelsea could perhaps offer the former England man the chance to correct that.
Mourinho has seen Lampard make a real impact at the Etihad Stadium and may feel Gerrard could offer a strong back-up option next term.
Manchester City are also rumoured to be interested in securing Gerrard on a short-team deal, but Brendan Rogers’ Liverpool are confident if the midfielder joins any club in the Premier League it will be the Reds.
