If you want a terrific view of the city of Toronto, go to the top of the CN Tower. It has the highest observation deck in the world, more than 1,460 feet (446 meters) from the ground. You’re up so high that you might think you’re in an airplane. The entire tower rises 1,815 feet (553 meters) from the ground.

Look up from almost anywhere in Toronto and you can see the CN Tower. CN stands for Canadian National Railways, the company that built the tower in the 1970s. Today, it’s Toronto’s most recognizable structure and a major tourist attraction. Radio and television signals are transmitted from it.

A CITY OF IMMIGRANTS

Toronto grew enormously during the 1990s. It had nearly four times as many people in 2001 as it had in 1991.

Almost half of Toronto’s citizens are immigrants. They come from over 150 countries and speak more than 100 languages. During the 1990s, more than half of the newcomers to the city came from Asia. Many of the new residents came from Hong Kong.

English is the main language spoken in Toronto. But many people in the city speak Chinese, French, Italian, and Portuguese. One radio station in Toronto broadcasts in 32 different languages!

FUN FOR KIDS

Ontario Place is a Toronto amusement park on an island in Lake Ontario. It’s got waterslides, bumper boats, and other fun things to ride and do.

Toronto is a cultural center. There are museums, concert halls, art galleries, and theaters galore. Many of Toronto’s museums have activities for kids. Toronto even has a shoe museum that displays different types of footwear worn during the last 4,500 years.

The Royal Ontario Museum has a discovery gallery where you can explore the museum’s collection with some hands-on activities. How would you like to make your own mummy or go on a field trip to the jungles of Vietnam?

Exhibits at the Ontario Science Centre let you touch a tornado, race a bobsled, and practice your pitching skills, among other activities. You can uncover the mysteries of science while having a good time.

Don’t miss the Hockey Hall of Fame, a museum dedicated to Canada’s most popular sport. Here you can put on a mask and gloves and play virtual hockey against Canadian hockey greats Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.
