Sarah, Duchess of York, was born Sarah Ferguson on 15 October 1959 and is the former wife of Prince Andrew. Her family came from Stuart descent and through their interest in polo came into frequent contact with the Royal Family. He father Ronald Ferguson was Prince Charles’ polo manager. Her parents separated in 1972 and her mother remarried an Argentinean and moved to South America. Sarah graduated from Queen’s Secretarial College in 1987 and worked for a public relations company in London.
She was married to Prince Andrew at Westminster Abbey on 23 July 1986 in a widely televised ceremony. She became a popular member of the Royal Family, but her husband was away for long periods serving in the Navy. Their two children are Princess Beatrice born in 1988, and Princess Eugenie born in 1990. The Duchess published a series of children’s books about Budgie the Helicopter, but her jet-set life style left her heavily in debt and her marriage was in trouble The Duke and Duchess were separated in March 1992, and following pictures in the press of Sarah in a compromising position with her American financial advisor they were divorced on 30 May 1996.
Following her divorce, she set out to pay back her debts and establish a media career in the United States commuting regularly from her home in London. She has done commercials for Weight Watchers, appeared on the US TV circuit and trading on her royal connections worked as a representative for companies including Wedgewood china. She has continued promoting her books and become a public speaker. Her friendship with her ex-husband Andrew continues and she is frequently seen out with her daughters.
Her over-spending and financial problems however remain. She embarrassed herself and the Royal Family in May 2010 by being filmed allegedly accepting money from an undercover newspaper reporter posing as a businessman to arrange an introduction to her former husband.
